Special Information for Necropsy Submissions

  1. Call back service for admission of samples to the Necropsy Laboratory is available from:
    1. 5:00 pm - 9:00 pm - Monday to Friday
    2. 9:00 am - 5:00 pm -  Saturdays
    3. 1:00 pm - 5:00 pm - Sundays and Holidays
  2. During these times, please call the PDS employee cell phone (306) 291-9281, who will arrange to receive your case.  For emergencies outside of these call periods, contact Norplex Calling Centre at (306) 668-8199 (pass code 92) and leave your name, contact phone number and a brief message.  A PDS employee will call you back to make arrangements to receive your case.  On Saturday, Sunday and/or Statutory Holidays, arrangements for an emergency necropsy examination can be made either through the PDS employee or Norplex Calling Centre when required.  There are additional charges for emergency necropsy examination and after-hours case admissions.
  3. Multiple fetuses or neonates under 10 days of age from a single dam (eg. Twins, litters) and small neonates (under 10 Kg), such as suckling piglets and lambs, from the same flock or barn problem, will be handled as one submission and will be processed as a single necropsy fee (N100 or N102).  Note: If individual processing and reporting is required, the regular necropsy fee will apply.
  4. Multiple birds from one poultry flock or barn (same problem, same ages), as well as lab animals from one group that are submitted as a single consignment, will be handled as one submission and will be processed as a single necropsy fee.
  5. Wherever possible, multiple samples from the same flock or herd will be combined by the lab to minimize costs for certain tests.  When submitting multiple samples from the same flock or herd, please submit all fresh tissues in individual containers and clearly identify the source of each sample.  If more then 10 Histopathology slides are required per submission, a charge of $12.30 will apply for each additional slide.
  6. Please note that Microbiology and Clinical Pathology testing is not included in the necropsy fees but additional testing is considered necessary in over 50% of necropsy cases.  Pathologists often send samples for culture, etc. on a routine basis to confirm or rule out bacterial infections.  If you do not want any additional testing, please specify this on the animal history form at the time of submission.
  7. Please note that the first 10 Histopathology slides, if required, are included in the cost of the necropsy.  If more than 10 Histopathology slides are required per submission, a charge of $12.30 will apply for each additional slide.
  8. For research cost estimates, please contact the Necropsy Laboratory.
  9. A $10.00 handling fee will apply to request for PDS to hold and maintain samples for further or future testing.  This fee is non-refundable.
  10. The animal remains disposal option currently utilized by PDS is an environmentally friendly thermo-chemical process (alkaline hydrolysis).  There are no additional fees for this service on cases submitted for a necropsy examination.  On site incineration/cremation services are no longer available.
  11. Contact the Diagnostic Services Office at (306) 966-7316, for information on local cremation services offered through Family Pet Cremation Services.  Clients will be assessed additional fees for provision of this service.  This service is limited to small animal cases whose Risk Assessment has eliminated the possibility of being infected with Risk Group 3 Organism(s).
